- Chambliss claims Senate win, ending Dems' hopes
GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia claimed victory Tuesday in a U.S. Senate runoff, killing Democratic hopes of gaining enough seats to halt filibusters. "You have delivered tonight a strong message to the world," Chambliss told supporters. Democrat Jim Martin had captured enough votes in November's three-person race to force the runoff.
- U.S. official lays blame for India attacks
India has blamed "elements from Pakistan" for the attacks that killed 179 people in Mumbai and is renewing demands for its neighbor to hand over wanted militant leaders. "The government expects that strong action would be taken against those elements, whosoever they may be, responsible for this outrage," a statement from the government said.

With Mumbai's Chabad House under siege last week, Indian nanny Sandra Samuel found Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, shot dead, lying on the ground with their son crying over them. Samuel picked up 2-year-old Moshe Holtzberg and made a dash for the exits, almost daring the gunmen to shoot, according to a family spokesman.
